Have you ever dreamed about escaping this world and going to a new self styled World instead? I guess there is nobody that cannot answer this question with a wholehearted yes. Our minds are being filled up with future scenarios, with what if’s but also with images of the Apocalypse of our Future World. So if it is possible to make whatever we want, why not turn dreams into explorations?

The Magicverse could make this dream come true. Although the Magicverse is not exactly a new virtual world, it is a concept that puts augmented reality layers over the entire earth, merging the digital and the physical worlds. It is an Emergent System of Systems designed by AR startup Magic Leap. In the Magicverse, a place would not only have a physical presence but also various digital layers.

“Other people dream about colonizing Mars, but Magic Leap believes that building the Magicverse on Earth and using it to solve our many problems will be just as important for the human race.”

How does this work? The Magicverse has a few layers. The base layers consist of the actual physical world (as we now know it) and a digital world. Other spatial application layers are for entertainment, communications, health & wellness, energy & water and mobility. The Magicverse is made with spatial computing, but how exactly these extra layers work, they haven’t shared with the World yet.

Magic Leap has big ambitions for its project: Rony Abovitz, Magic Leap’s CEO, believes “the Magicverse can provide massive economic amplifiers to communities around the world, erode space and time boundaries, and enable communication and work to occur in completely new ways, at fractions of the cost of current physical systems” . According to Abovitz, the Magicverse will also give creative people the opportunity to build their own story worlds. The company has selected a few qualities that will be blended into the everyday experience of the Magicverse. These qualities are Presence, Persistence, Scale, Awareness, Interactivity, Respect, and Sentience.

The Magicverse reminded us of science fiction cyberspaces like The Matrix of The OASIS. Therefore, it may not come as a surprise that John Gaeta, the SVP Creative Strategy at Magic Leap, was also responsible for the visual effects of the Matrix trilogy. The Magic Leap explained in a blog post that Walt Disney’s Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, which was “a real city that would never cease to be a blueprint of the future”, was one of the main inspirations for the Magicverse.

A crucial component for Magicverse to work is a high-speed network, something 5G is providing us with. To access the Magicverse, you will need technology such as Magic Leap’s AR headset. If the Magicverse will really live up to its expectations and is going to be important for the world economy, this could lead to a new digital divide. It could create more social and economic inequality between the people who do have access to these expensive headsets and those who don’t.

Let us put the Magicverse into trend perspective for you, but where to start. This new innovation all of sudden turns Futurism in to realism. It drives and stimulates escapism, by providing a getaway that is superior to the ‘real world’ and can even be adjusted to everyone’s own preferences. It gives user the chance to escape from reality but not without having to leave our World by illustrating our Super Digitalized World, the ever more fading line between online and offline. . Althought it now seems more of an entertainment product, it could be perfect to learn about the choices we make today for our Future World. What if questions, can be experienced in the different World Scenario’s to learn for future decisions. Is this
concept really going to improve our quality of life, or will this privilege be reserved for a small group of people, creating a new digital divide?
